The Caux Round Table was privileged to have as its Chair for many years Winston R. Wallin. Win transformed the effort from a network that met annually in Caux, Switzerland, to a more global undertaking. As importantly, he directed the concern for responsible business practices from the management of large, multinational companies to encompass as well a response to global challenges of wealth creation and rising standards of living for all.
He wrote down his vision of the global reach of business ethics or corporate responsibility in a short paper some ten years ago. His thesis is as true today as it was then and should not be forgotten by those who would concern themselves for leaving the world a little better off than it was before they passed through.
In memory of Win, we’ve linked, directly below, a copy of his paper for your consideration. He would have been pleased that you took a moment to reflect on his message of necessary engagement.
Since the first publication of his paper, the Caux Round Table has moved in many ways to implement his vision that government, business and civil society all should be held accountable for the quality of our economic systems.
Win was President of the Pillsbury Company and Chair and CEO of Medtronic, transforming the latter company into a major force in world medical technology. He was a major philanthropist and stalwart patron of many non-profit undertakings here in Minnesota. He will be missed.
